How We Calculate Your Price

Your estimate is based on a simple formula: the current spot price of the metal, multiplied by its purity fraction, multiplied by the weight.

For example, 10 grams of 18-karat gold uses 75% of the pure gold spot price — because 18K is 75% pure gold. We then apply our payout percentage, which covers refining and business costs.

Every variable in that formula is visible in the calculator above. No hidden fees, no surprises.

Understanding Gold & Silver Purity

Gold purity is measured in karats. 24K is pure gold (99.9%). Most jewellery is 9K (37.5%), 14K (58.5%), or 18K (75%). Coins are often 22K (91.7%). The higher the karat, the more gold content and the higher the value.

Silver purity is expressed as a number: 999 is pure silver, 925 is sterling silver (92.5% pure), and 800 is continental silver. Most silver jewellery and flatware is sterling.

Not sure what you have? Look for a small hallmark stamp — usually inside a ring band or on a clasp. If you can't find one, don't worry. We test everything for free using professional XRF equipment.

What Is the Spot Price?

The spot price is the current market rate for one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of pure metal. It's set by global commodity exchanges and changes throughout the trading day based on supply, demand, and market conditions.

Our calculator uses the latest available spot price in Australian dollars. We update our prices regularly to stay in line with the market.

The price you see in the calculator is always an estimate. Spot prices move — but day-to-day changes are usually small. The best way to lock in your price is to visit us in store.
